
In Chennai, a tragic incident occurred at the Aavin plant in Tiruvallur district resulting in the death of a 30-year-old female employee named K Umarani. The incident occurred when her dupatta got entangled in a conveyor belt, causing a severe throat injury. Following the incident, the plant's supervisor, Varun Kumar, was arrested for negligence leading to Umarani's death and was subsequently sent to jail. In response, Aavin management suspended two employees and initiated disciplinary action against five others. The government has promised compensation to Umarani's family and is considering implementing uniform and safer dress codes to prevent future accidents. Umarani, who hailed from Bommiampatti in Salem, had recently joined the Kakkalur plant and was working in the packaging section. The tragic accident took place when her dupatta got caught in the conveyor belt, leading to a fatal injury. The Minister for Dairy Development emphasized the importance of strengthening safety measures at all Aavin plants, particularly for women employees working in high-risk areas. Discussions are ongoing regarding the introduction of overcoats to improve safety standards while respecting cultural practices. Umarani's family is entitled to receive immediate compensation of 10 lakhs, as she leaves behind two children.SA Ponnusamy from TN Milk Dealers Welfare Association stated that Aavin is currently negotiating with the Tiruvallur collector to ensure that the family receives proper compensation and promptly receives the individual's terminal benefits and settlements.
